The Milwaukee soldiers Home – located on the grounds of the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, overlooking American Family Field – is a National Historic Landmark, and one of Wisconsin’s most important historic assets.
This campus was created as a place of healing for veterans returning from the civil war, and has housed and served veterans ever since. In 2021, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and a public-private coalition that included hundreds of donors, we celebrated a major victory as veterans were welcomed home to six rehabilitated historic buildings on campus.
Building on this success, the focus now shifts to the Ward Memorial Theater, Soldiers Home Chapel, and the Governor’s Mansion – restoring these three sacred historic buildings while transforming them into spaces for life-changing support for veterans.
This isn’t just a Second Act for the buildings. It’s a Second Act for veterans who will find healing, purpose, and community within them.
